ONG Hoopla XVII Sets All-Time Record with 904 Teams!

SALEM, OREGON (8/10/15) - Oregon National Guard Hoopla XVII set an all-time record with 904 total teams in 2015, organizers announced Monday.

"Surpassing the 900 team mark is a milestone for us," said Tournament Director Jason Unruh. "We take pride in continuing to grow and evolve over time, and we work hard in that way. At the same time, the quality of our participants experience remains a primary focus for us. We are pleased that this year, overall, our growth did not come at the expense of the experience our players enjoyed. If anything, the experience was even greater."

The event's growth was not limited to participant numbers only.

ONG Hoopla became an Official Qualifer for the USA Basketball 3x3 National Tournaments held at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Four such qualifying tournaments were held at ONG Hoopla XVII in separate and new Men's Open, Women's Open, Men's 18U and Women's 18U divisions.

"There is no question the Official Qualifying Tournaments were a huge hit," said Unruh. "We intend to continue to build our relationship with USA Basketball."

In addition, ONG Hoopla operated and hosted the CT Studd 4x4 Tournament benefiting Young Life for the first time on Friday of Tournament Week.

Other events enjoyed surging numbers:  both the Thursday Free Kids Clinic presented by Drs. Howerton, Hopkin & Kennedy and the Friday LCG Pence Construction Hoopla Hoop Camp had all-time high numbers of participants, and the Hoopla Fun Run presented by Salem Kroc Center benefiting Liberty House enjoyed a new day, time and course.

"2015 was a banner year for us," remarked Unruh, "but we can't wait for ONG Hoopla XVIII!"

ONG Hoopla XVII Team Registration Deadline Extended to Monday, July 27

Oregon National Guard Hoopla Tournament Director Jason Unruh commented, "We can not promise extensions every year, but we are pleased to announce an extension this year. We hope this is helpful for many who otherwise would have missed out on the event in 2015."

Teams may sign up through midnight on July 27 at www.onghoopla.com/registration. After that, only "fill-in" teams will be allowed into the tournament, all subject to Tournament approval and not guaranteed for any.

The winning team of each of these four qualifying divisions at ONG Hoopla XVII will earn the opportunity to represent ONG Hoopla at the 2016 USA Basketball 3x3 National Tournaments held at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Each qualifying Hoopla team will have lodging, meals, and USA Basketball apparel provided at the national tournament, and airfare may be subsidized by Hoopla as well, depending on division turnout. Winners of the USA Basketball 3x3 National Tournament become the USA Basketball 3x3 National Team that will represent the USA at the 2016 FIBA 3x3 World Championships.

“This is a great step for ONG Hoopla,” said Tournament Director Jason Unruh. “To be partnering with what is arguably the world’s most important basketball organization in USA Basketball, and to give our participants this amazing opportunity is awesome. We are pumped.  This is going to be a special addition to our event as people learn how incredible this opportunity is for them.”

The qualifying divisions at ONG Hoopla will be played under a different format than the rest of the tournament.  The games will be played under FIBA 3x3 rules, with a 12-second shot clock, the entire 3-point arc as the take-back area, and some different checking-the-ball rules. “The net result of playing FIBA 3x3 rules is it is a little bit different game,” said Unruh. “Games are faster, shooting matters a bit more, and it is very exciting.”

ONG Hoopla and USA Basketball began the relationship a year ago, and in April Hoopla sent one team to the USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Tournament.  That team was comprised of Hoopla participants Zach Reichle and Dylan Jordan of Wilsonville High School, Teagan Quitoriano of Sprague High School, and Nik Blake of Sherwood High School. Beyond having an incredible experience, the team represented Hoopla well by making it to the semi-finals before losing to the eventual national champions. “Without question, the success those guys had helped pave the way for our growing relationship with USA Basketball,” remarked Unruh.

“We are proud and excited to have four qualifying divisions at ONG Hoopla XVII,” said Travis Johnson, USA Basketball 3x3 Program Director. “Hoopla is a huge event and respected nationally, and we were very impressed by the team they sent to the 2015 USA Basketball 3x3 USA Basketball U18 National Tournament. We are looking forward to our partnership with Hoopla and seeing what the Pacific Northwest can send our way in 2016.”

The registration deadline for ONG Hoopla XVII, including the USA Basketball qualifying divisions, is July 16. Interested teams can register immediately at www.onghoopla.com/registration.

"Epic" ONG Hoopla Slated for August 8-9, with Big Developments!

Salem (OR) - May 22, 2015 - Team registration for Oregon National Guard Hoopla XVII will open just around the corner on June 1, but that's not all tournament officials have in store for ONG Hoopla aficionados.

Not by a longshot.

"We are excited every year for ONG Hoopla," said Tournament Director Jason Unruh, "but this year... this year could be epic."

Not known for hyperbole, that is a big statement coming from Unruh. When pressed for more details, the 17-year captain of the Hoopla ship offered more excitement, but little by way of details.

"All I can tell you at this point is that the ONG Hoopla experience is going to new levels in 2015, and this will be true in multiple ways. There is much to share... in due time."

This year's event is slated for August 8-9 in the shadows of the Oregon State Capitol Building in Salem.
